The State of Small Business Websites in Bellingham (2026)
The State of Small Business Websites in Bellingham (2026)
We audited 100 small business websites in Bellingham and Whatcom County across 10 industries. The findings reveal both problems and opportunities for local business owners.
Here's what we found — and what it means for your business.
Methodology
We randomly selected 100 small business websites in Bellingham across these industries: plumbing, HVAC, roofing, dental, legal, restaurants, retail, landscaping, auto repair, and real estate. Each site was evaluated on:
- Mobile responsiveness
- Page speed (Google PageSpeed Insights)
- SEO basics (title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure)
- Google Business Profile optimization
- SSL/HTTPS configuration
- Review count and rating
- Content quality and freshness
The Big Picture: Most Bellingham Websites Are Underperforming
Key findings:
- 67% of sites scored below 50 on Google PageSpeed Insights (mobile). This means two-thirds of Bellingham businesses have websites that Google considers slow.
- 43% of sites lack proper SSL/HTTPS configuration. Browsers show "Not Secure" warnings, and Google penalizes these sites in search rankings.
- 71% have no blog or content strategy. They're missing out on informational search traffic that builds trust and authority.
- 58% have generic or missing meta descriptions. When these sites appear in Google, the snippets are either auto-generated or say nothing compelling.
- 39% are not mobile-responsive or have significant mobile usability issues (tiny buttons, horizontal scrolling, unreadable text).
Page Speed: The Silent Killer
This was the most striking finding. Nearly 7 in 10 Bellingham business websites load too slowly on mobile devices.
Average scores by industry:
- Restaurants: 28/100 (worst — heavy images, outdated platforms)
- Auto Repair: 35/100
- Retail: 38/100
- Landscaping: 41/100
- Plumbing: 45/100
- HVAC: 47/100
- Real Estate: 48/100
- Roofing: 52/100
- Legal: 55/100
- Dental: 62/100 (best — many use modern practice management platforms)
Why this matters: Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. A site scoring 28/100 is at a significant disadvantage compared to a competitor scoring 85/100 — even if the content and reviews are similar.
The opportunity: If you fix your page speed while competitors don't, you get an immediate ranking advantage.
The Mobile Gap
Despite mobile devices accounting for over 60% of web traffic, 39% of Bellingham business sites have significant mobile issues.
Common problems we found:
- Phone numbers that aren't clickable (users have to manually dial)
- Contact forms with tiny input fields
- Navigation menus that don't work on touch screens
- Images that extend beyond the screen, causing horizontal scrolling
- Text too small to read without zooming
For service businesses, this is critical. Someone searching "emergency plumber" on their phone at 10 PM isn't going to pinch-and-zoom through your site. They're hitting the back button and calling the next result.
SEO Basics: Low-Hanging Fruit
The majority of Bellingham business websites are missing basic SEO elements that take minimal effort to implement:
- 58% have generic meta descriptions or none at all
- 45% don't have unique title tags for each page (many use the same title on every page)
- 62% have no schema markup (structured data that helps Google understand your business)
- 71% have no blog or content beyond basic service pages
- 52% have missing or broken XML sitemaps
- 34% have no Google Analytics installed (they literally can't measure their traffic)
These aren't advanced SEO tactics. These are the basics — the equivalent of putting a sign on your storefront. The good news? Fixing these puts you ahead of more than half your competitors.
Google Business Profile: The Overlooked Asset
Average Google review count by industry:
- Restaurants: 142 reviews (highest)
- Dental: 38 reviews
- Legal: 22 reviews
- Plumbing: 18 reviews
- HVAC: 15 reviews
- Roofing: 12 reviews
- Landscaping: 9 reviews
- Auto Repair: 8 reviews
- Retail: 7 reviews
Outside of restaurants, most Bellingham businesses have fewer than 20 Google reviews. This represents a massive opportunity — reaching 50+ reviews while competitors sit at 10-15 creates an outsized competitive advantage.
GBP optimization issues we found:
- 28% have incomplete business information
- 44% haven't posted in the last 30 days
- 31% have incorrect business hours
- 52% have fewer than 5 photos
- 19% haven't responded to reviews in the last 3 months
What Top-Performing Businesses Do Differently
The top 10% of websites we audited shared these characteristics:
- Fast loading times (under 2 seconds, PageSpeed score 80+)
- Professional, modern design that's clearly custom or heavily customized
- Active content strategy with blog posts updated at least monthly
- Strong review profiles (50+ reviews, 4.7+ rating, regular responses)
- Clear calls-to-action on every page (phone number, form, specific next step)
- Proper tracking (Google Analytics, call tracking, form tracking)
- SSL/HTTPS properly configured
- Mobile-first design with large tap targets and readable text
These businesses consistently rank in the top 3 for their service keywords. They generate more leads online. And they spend less per lead than competitors because their organic presence does the heavy lifting.
Industry-Specific Insights
Contractors (Plumbing, HVAC, Roofing, Electrical): The contractor industry in Bellingham has the widest gap between top performers and everyone else. A handful of companies have invested in professional websites and SEO — they dominate search results. The rest have dated sites with no content strategy.
Opportunity: If you're a contractor with a poor website, you're competing for leftovers while 2-3 competitors with professional sites take the majority of online leads.
Professional Services (Legal, Dental, Real Estate): These industries generally have better websites (more budget allocation), but still underperform on content and reviews. Legal firms in particular tend toward static, brochure-style sites with no blog content — a missed opportunity given the volume of legal questions people search online.
Restaurants and Retail: Often the worst technical performance due to reliance on platforms like Wix, Squarespace, or industry-specific tools that prioritize ease of use over speed. However, restaurants compensate with high review volumes.
What This Means for Your Business
If your website has the issues described in this audit, you're leaving money on the table — probably a lot of it. But here's the silver lining: because most of your competitors have the same problems, fixing yours puts you ahead.
The businesses that will dominate Bellingham's local search results in the next 12 months aren't necessarily the biggest or the oldest. They're the ones that invest in the fundamentals: a fast website, solid SEO, active review management, and consistent content.
Start with these three steps:
- Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights and fix critical issues
- Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile completely
- Start actively asking for reviews after every positive customer interaction
These three actions alone will put you ahead of 60% of your competition in Bellingham.
